Young Harris College in the north Georgia mountains was founded in 1886 by Methodist minister Artemas Lester as McTyeire Institute and was renamed for benefactor Young L.G. Harris. A 1911 fire destroyed the main classroom building, which was rebuilt as Sharp Hall. From the early 1910s it offered only two-year degrees, and it became a four-year college in 2008. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and sits on a rural 485-acre campus. Wikipedia lists 1,425 undergraduates as of 2020, more than 30 majors and 22 minors, bachelor's degrees in arts, fine arts and science, and a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio. The Mountain Lions finished their move to NCAA Division II in 2014 and have played in Conference Carolinas since 2023-24. Margaret Adger Pitts left a bequest that later funded scholarships and campus improvements.
