Wrexham University's earliest predecessor was the Wrexham School of Science and Art, established in 1887. It first offered degrees in 1924, became the Denbighshire Technical Institute in 1927 and moved to Regent Street, now home to its arts and design courses. After developments were completed in 1939 it became the Denbighshire Technical College, and after several mergers the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education in 1975. In 2008 it gained university status as Glyndwr University, named after Owain Glyndwr, and in 2023 it rebranded as Wrexham University. It had 8,560 students in 2024/25.
