Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a private research university in Worcester, Massachusetts, founded in 1865. It enrolled about 7,400 students in fall 2025, including roughly 5,500 undergraduates. WPI is best known for the WPI Plan, a project-based learning approach established in 1970. Students take courses in seven-week terms and complete required projects, notably the Interactive Qualifying Project and the Major Qualifying Project, often at off-campus project centers around the world. The institute offers programs in engineering, science, business, computing and the humanities. WPI is test-optional (it piloted a test-blind policy from 2021 to 2024, then returned to test-optional) and first-year applicants use the Common Application with a counselor and a teacher recommendation.
