Whittier College is a private liberal arts college in Whittier, California, southeast of Los Angeles. The town was established by Quakers in 1887 and the college grew out of Whittier Academy, receiving its state charter in 1901 with 25 students. It is named for the Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier and has been secular since the 1940s, though it keeps its Quaker heritage. Its teams are the Poets, who compete in NCAA Division III in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with Johnny Poet as mascot. Enrollment is under 1,000, with Wikipedia listing 797 for 2025. For the 2024-2025 admission cycle the college became test-blind, meaning it does not consider SAT or ACT scores at all, a step beyond its earlier test-optional policy.
