Western State College of Law was founded in 1966 in Orange County. It lost a 1987 bid for ABA accreditation, had three campuses by 1990, and saw its San Diego campus become the independent Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 1995. The Irvine location closed the next year and students consolidated in Fullerton. Provisional ABA accreditation came in 1998 and full accreditation in 2005, making it the third for-profit law school approved by the ABA. Ownership passed from Argosy Education Group to Education Management Corporation, then Argosy University and the Dream Center Foundation, before a federal court approved Westcliff University's purchase in 2019; the ABA continued accreditation in December 2019. The campus returned to Irvine in January 2016. As of January 2024 it had 213 full-time and 77 part-time students. It offers full- and part-time J.D. programmes and a Master of Legal Studies.
