Wesleyan University is a private liberal arts university in Middletown, Connecticut, founded in 1831 by Methodist leaders and local citizens and named after John Wesley. It opened with 48 students, a president, three professors and one tutor, at tuition of $36 a year, and from the start offered a liberal arts rather than a theological course. It was coeducational from 1872 to 1912 and again from 1968. Aggregators list about 3,000 to 3,800 undergraduates, with a few hundred graduate students, and acceptance rates between about 16 and 20 percent depending on the year. Early Decision is offered and the regular deadline is commonly listed as January 1. One source says SAT and ACT scores are considered but not required, but testing policy and fees should be confirmed with the admissions office because figures from different years conflict. The input address on Wyllys Avenue is in Middletown. Application fees are listed as $55 or $65 depending on the source.
