Washington College is a private liberal arts college in Chestertown, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore. It grew out of the Kent County Free School, and Maryland granted its first charter in May 1782. George Washington allowed the college to use his name, pledged 50 guineas and served on its board of visitors and governors until 1789, when a Chestertown delegation presented him with an honorary doctor of laws degree. The college confers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. It houses the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, which administers the $50,000 George Washington Book Prize, and the Rose O'Neill Literary House. Since 1968 it has awarded the Sophie Kerr Prize, described as the nation's largest undergraduate literary prize.
