Warner University in Lake Wales was founded in 1968 as Warner Southern College by the Southeastern Association of the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana), named after the movement's early leader Daniel Warner. A church commission formed in 1962, land was donated in 1964, and the first freshman class of 27 arrived in 1968. The name changed to Warner University in 2008. The 360-acre campus is about five miles south of Lake Wales, roughly midway between Tampa and Orlando. Enrollment reached 1,215 in fall 2017. Over 30 undergraduate programmes are offered on campus, along with programmes for working adults online and on site, and the HEART Institute simulates a developing-country village for missionary training. The Royals compete in the NAIA, mainly in the Sun Conference, with 21 varsity sports, and Warner was the first Florida college to offer varsity men's volleyball.
