Walden University is a private, for-profit online university headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was founded in 1970 by New York teachers Bernie and Rita Turner to offer doctoral study to working educators, held its first classes in Naples, Florida in 1971, and moved its headquarters to Minneapolis in 1982. It offers bachelor's, master's, doctoral and specialist degrees and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It is known for conferring many healthcare administration, nursing and public health degrees. Sylvan Learning Systems gained control in 2002; the parent company later became Laureate Education, and Wikipedia gives conflicting accounts of the 2021 sale (Covista versus Adtalem). Fall 2023 enrollment was about 44,000 students. Because programs are delivered online, admission requirements vary by program and degree level.
