The University of the West of Scotland was formed on 1 August 2007 by the merger of the University of Paisley with Bell College in Hamilton, and the Privy Council approved the name on 30 November 2007. Bell College was founded in 1972. The Paisley side has roots in the late nineteenth century, through many name changes and mergers. The merged university had around 15,000 students at four campuses, in Paisley, Hamilton, Dumfries and Ayr, plus a fifth in London. Some £15 million went into new facilities at the merger, and a further £71.2 million has since been spent on the Ayr Campus.
