The University of the Highlands and Islands began as a project launched in 1992, and over the following decade it grew into UHI Millennium Institute, established in 2001. The Privy Council awarded it university status in February 2011. It is a partnership of 13 colleges and research institutions rather than a single campus, with academic partners in Inverness, Perth, Elgin, the Isle of Skye, Fort William, Shetland, Orkney and the Outer Hebrides. It reports around 31,000 students, roughly 11,200 in higher education and 19,800 in further education.
