University of the Arts London was formed in 1986 through the merger of seven independent art, design, fashion and media colleges as the London Institute. It gained university status in 2003 and took its current name in 2004. Six colleges make it up today: Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Art and Design, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Art. Central Saint Martins itself came from the 1989 merger of Saint Martin's School of Art (1854) and the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1896). More than 18,000 students are enrolled.
