The University of Wolverhampton was founded in 1827 as the Wolverhampton Tradesmen's and Mechanics' Institute, which ran classes and a library until 1845. Its educational work then continued through the Wolverhampton Free Library, opened in 1870, which became the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Technical College in 1926. In 1969 that merged with the Municipal School of Art, founded in 1851, to form Wolverhampton Polytechnic, and the polytechnic was granted university status in 1992. There were 23,665 students in 2024/25, including 15,970 undergraduates and 7,695 postgraduates.
