The University of West Florida was established in 1963, and its first students began classes in fall 1967 as an upper-level institution. Harold Crosby was appointed first president in 1964, and the student body chose the Argonaut name that year. The first commencement in June 1968 awarded degrees to 58 students. The main campus covers about 1,600 acres roughly ten miles north of downtown Pensacola, with a second location in Fort Walton Beach. It is a public research university in the State University System of Florida with four colleges, among them the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering and the Usha Kundu, MD College of Health. The UWF Historic Trust curates the Arcadia Mill Complex, Florida's first water-powered industrial complex. The football team won the NCAA Division II national title in 2019, and the Argonauts have won eleven national championships overall. Enrollment is about 15,601 students, according to Wikipedia's infobox.
