The University of Wales was founded by Royal Charter in 1893 as a federal university with three constituent colleges, Aberystwyth, Bangor and Cardiff, and was the first and oldest university in Wales. It accredited institutions throughout Wales and validated courses in Britain and abroad, with more than 100,000 students over its existence. In 2007 it changed from a federal to a confederal structure and many of its constituent colleges became independent universities. It has been functionally integrated with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David since August 2017, and continues to exist in a limited capacity.
