The University of Sussex received its royal charter in August 1961 and was the first of what came to be called the plate glass universities. It began at Knoyle Hall in Brighton, and Falmer House on the Falmer campus opened in 1962. The campus was designed by Sir Basil Spence in the 1960s and is now Grade I listed. There were only 52 students in 1961-62, and the university now has more than 17,000. It is in Falmer, East Sussex, just outside Brighton.
