The University of Strathclyde has a history dating to 1796 and Anderson's Institution, funded by the bequest of John Anderson, professor of natural philosophy at the University of Glasgow, who wanted a place devoted to "useful learning" in practical and vocational subjects. It was later Anderson's University, Anderson's College, the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College, the Royal Technical College and, from 1956, the Royal College of Science and Technology. In 1964 it merged with the Scottish College of Commerce and received its Royal Charter, becoming the first university established in Scotland for nearly 400 years. It had 22,225 students in 2024/25.
