The University of Southern Mississippi, commonly called Southern Miss, is a public research university whose main campus is in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It was founded on March 30, 1910, as Mississippi Normal College, a teacher-training school. A second major campus, Gulf Park, is in Long Beach. The Carnegie Classification lists it as R1: Doctoral Universities with Very High Research Activity. Wikipedia reports fall 2020 enrollment of 14,606, including 11,451 undergraduates and 3,155 postgraduates. Its athletic teams, the Golden Eagles, compete in NCAA Division I FBS, mainly in the Sun Belt Conference. The university's admissions office states that freshmen must complete the College Preparatory Curriculum and submit ACT or SAT scores unless they qualify through a high GPA, and that scholarship consideration requires a test score. The Hattiesburg campus is at 118 College Drive.
