The University of South Wales was formed on 11 April 2013 through the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport. Its roots go back to the Newport Mechanics' Institute of 1841. Glamorgan Polytechnic merged with the Glamorgan College of Education in Barry and was redesignated the Polytechnic of Wales in 1975, then achieved university status in 1992 as the University of Glamorgan. The Treforest campus was the main former Glamorgan site, and there are also campuses in Cardiff and Newport. The £35 million Newport city centre campus opened in 2011. It offers over 500 courses to students from more than 120 countries.
