The University of South Wales traces its roots to the Newport Mechanics' Institute, founded in 1841, and took its current form in 2013 following the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport. Its Dubai campus was announced in 2017 and opened to students in September 2018 in Dubai South, initially as an Aviation Academy offering British bachelor's degrees in aircraft maintenance engineering. The Dubai campus has since expanded into multi-disciplinary master's programmes, including cybersecurity and global logistics and supply chain management, alongside its original aviation focus.
