The University of South Florida was founded in 1956, got its name from the Florida Cabinet in 1957, and began classes in 1960. It is a public research university in Tampa and part of Florida's State University System. Wikipedia lists 49,875 students for 2025-26, including 37,517 undergraduates, and the athletic teams are the Bulls, who compete in the American Athletic Conference. USF is not test optional: it requires an SAT, ACT or CLT score from every first-year applicant and superscores across test dates. A summary of its 2025-26 Common Data Set puts the acceptance rate near 41 percent, with in-state applicants admitted at 76 percent and out-of-state at 36 percent. Enrolled first-years had a middle-50 percent SAT range of 1160 to 1340. The university does not require or review an essay for first-year admission, and there is no hard GPA cutoff.
