The University of Sheffield grew from three local institutions: the Sheffield School of Medicine, founded in 1828 and by far the oldest, Firth College, established in 1879 by the steel manufacturer Mark Firth, and the Sheffield Technical School of 1884. They were amalgamated by Royal Charter in 1897 as University College of Sheffield, and the University of Sheffield received its own Royal Charter on 31 May 1905, when there were 114 full-time degree students. The Firth Court building on Western Bank was opened by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra that July. Sheffield is one of the original redbrick universities and a founding member of the Russell Group.
