The University of Sharjah (UoS) was established in 1997 by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, who envisioned an academic institution blending Islamic and Arab cultural values with the highest international standards, aiming to address the educational and developmental needs of the UAE and the wider Gulf region. As a government university rather than a private institution, it has grown steadily since its founding, expanding beyond its main Sharjah campus with a branch in Khorfakkan opened on 11 September 2007 to serve the eastern region, and a Kalba campus launched on 28 February 2011. That same year, 2011, the university also opened its University Hospital Sharjah and University Dental Hospital Sharjah, giving students in medicine and dentistry direct access to teaching hospitals as part of their training.
