The University of San Francisco began on October 15, 1855, when the Jesuit priest Anthony Maraschi opened St. Ignatius Academy with three students and three faculty, a perfect 1:1 ratio. It became St. Ignatius College in 1859 with a state charter to grant degrees, and enrollment reached 457 by 1862, largely first- and second-generation Irish and Italian immigrants. The school moved to Van Ness Avenue in 1880, to Hayes and Shrader Streets after the 1906 earthquake and fire, and to its present site near Golden Gate Park in 1927. Wikipedia lists about 8,913 students, 5,287 undergraduates and 3,504 graduate students, though it gives no year. USF is test-optional for first-year applicants, makes the recommendation letter optional and uses the 650-word Common App essay. Applicants can use the Common App, Coalition Application or USF's direct application.
