The University of Salford traces its origins to two institutions, Pendleton Mechanics' Institute (1850) and Salford Working Men's College (1858), which merged to open as the Royal Technical Institute in 1896. It was renamed the Royal Technical College in 1921 and split in 1958, with the Royal College of Advanced Technology becoming the University of Salford when it received its royal charter on 10 February 1967. A separate University College Salford, formed in 1992, merged with it in 1996. The Peel Park campus lies close to Manchester city centre.
