The University of Reading started in 1892 as the University Extension College, Reading, an extension college of Christ Church, Oxford. It became University College, Reading in 1902 and received its Royal Charter in 1926, the only university to be chartered between the two world wars. The main Whiteknights campus, a 130-hectare estate with a lake and rare trees, was bought in 1947 and was once the home of the Marquis of Blandford. Henley Business School, set up at Greenlands in 1946, merged with Reading in 2008. The university has over 27,000 students from more than 160 countries.
