The University of Plymouth was originally founded as the Plymouth School of Navigation in 1862, with John Merryfield establishing it to train mariners. It was renamed Plymouth College of Technology in 1962 and became a polytechnic in 1970. The Seale-Hayne Agricultural College merged in 1989, creating Polytechnic South West, and the polytechnic was awarded university status in 1992 and took the name University of Plymouth. It had 18,910 students in 2020/21, of whom 15,200 were undergraduates and 3,710 postgraduates.
