The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley was founded in 1889 as the State Normal School of Colorado and opened in 1890 with 96 students and four instructors. It went through several names before adopting the current one in 1970, and teacher education remains central to its identity. The suburban campus covers about 260 acres. Fall 2024 enrollment was 8,869, with 6,480 undergraduates and 2,389 postgraduates. Six colleges include the Monfort College of Business, and UNC joins CU and CSU in the Colorado School of Public Health. Extended campuses operate in Loveland, Denver/Aurora and Colorado Springs. The Bears compete in NCAA Division I FCS in the Big Sky Conference, which they joined in 2006; they won Division II football titles in 1996 and 1997, and the 2011 conference basketball title brought a first NCAA tournament berth. The mascot is Klawz the Bear and the motto is Sapientia in aeternum est.
