The University of New England (UNE) is a private university in Maine with its main campus in Biddeford and a second campus in Portland, plus a campus in Tangier, Morocco. Its roots go back to Westbrook Seminary, which opened in 1831 on the Portland campus, and the modern university formed around 1979 from St. Francis College and the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. It is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education and Wikipedia classifies it as an R2 doctoral university. Fall 2025 enrollment was about 5,900, including roughly 2,100 undergraduates. UNE describes itself as the largest independent university in Maine, houses the state's only medical school (osteopathic) and only dental school, and trains many of Maine's health care professionals. Its Nor'easters compete in NCAA Division III. The row's website belongs to a different university of the same name in Australia.
