The University of Mississippi, nicknamed Ole Miss, is a public research university in Oxford, Mississippi, with its medical center in Jackson. The state legislature chartered it on February 24, 1844, and it admitted its first 80 students in 1848. During the Civil War it served as a Confederate hospital, and in 1962 a riot broke out on campus when segregationists tried to block the enrollment of African American student James Meredith. The university is linked to novelist William Faulkner, whose former home Rowan Oak it owns, and its Grove tailgating tradition is well known. The admissions page lets applicants use the university's own application or the Common Application. Mississippi residents qualify via 3.2 GPA, 2.5 GPA with ACT 16, or 2.0 GPA with ACT 18.
