The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi, located at 2500 N. State St. in Jackson. It opened on July 1, 1955 as a four-year medical school, though its roots reach back to a two-year medical school founded in Oxford in 1903. Its 164-acre campus houses schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, health related professions, pharmacy and graduate studies in the health sciences, with programs leading to MD, PhD, DMD, MS and nursing degrees. UMMC calls itself the state's only academic medical center. It is known for being the state's only Level I trauma center, its only children's hospital, its only organ transplant program and the AirCare helicopter service. Admissions are run by each school; the School of Medicine uses AMCAS and holistic review.
