The University of Miami was chartered in 1925, but it only began operating in earnest in 1926 when developer George E. Merrick gave land and money. The Florida land bust, a hurricane and the Depression slowed progress early on, and for a time classes were held in a hotel, which earned it the nickname Cardboard College. Its 239-acre main campus is in Coral Gables, about seven miles south of downtown Miami, and it is a private research university. Federal data lists total enrollment near 19,600, including about 12,900 undergraduates. Admission has become highly selective, with recent acceptance rates reported at 18 to 19 percent. UM requires the Common Application and does not accept the Coalition Application. First-year applicants write a personal statement and a 250-word supplemental essay and submit one recommendation letter. Standardized test scores are required starting with Fall 2026 entry, with exceptions for some music, art and architecture programs.
