The University of Massachusetts Lowell is a public research university in Lowell, Massachusetts, and part of the University of Massachusetts system. Its roots lie in two institutions founded in the 1890s: the Lowell Normal School, chartered in 1894 for teacher training, and the Lowell Textile School, established in 1895. They later became Lowell State College and Lowell Technological Institute, merged in the 1970s to form the University of Lowell, and joined the UMass system in 1991. It offers undergraduate, master's and doctoral programs, with particular strength in engineering, sciences, nursing, business and education. First-year admission uses holistic review of at least 17 college-preparatory courses. SAT or ACT scores are not automatically required, and the average GPA of fall 2023 entrants was 3.69. Art and design applicants must submit a portfolio.
