The University of Massachusetts Boston is a public research university established by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1964, the second campus of the UMass system. It opened in 1965 in a renovated building at Park Square downtown and moved to its Columbia Point campus in Dorchester in 1974. Its creation responded to heavy demand for public higher education among metropolitan Boston students that UMass Amherst could not meet. The campus sits on a peninsula on Boston Harbor at Morrissey Boulevard and serves a large commuter and first-generation student population. First-year applicants may apply with the UMass Boston application or the Common Application, with SAT or ACT scores unless applying under the No Test Option, a counselor or teacher recommendation, and English proficiency for non-native speakers. Early Action deadlines are November 1 and January 1.
