The University of Maine at Machias (UMaine Machias) is a public college on the Machias River in Downeast Maine and part of the University of Maine System. It was founded in 1909 as Washington State Normal School for teacher training, was later Washington State Teachers College and Washington State College, and has carried its current name since 1971. In 2016 it announced a partnership with the University of Maine in Orono, sharing administrators, and its own website now presents it as the Downeast regional campus of the University of Maine, with 30-plus academic programs and an 11-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. Wikipedia describes a 243-acre rural coastal campus and notes athletics were suspended in July 2020. Machias is known for marine and environmental sciences, and its first-year application goes through the University of Maine Common App listing. The row had no website; machias.edu is the verified official site and is live with September 2026 content.
