It traces its roots to 1798, when it was chartered as Jefferson Seminary, and is classified R1, very high research activity. UofL enrolled 25,005 students in fall 2025, including 18,053 undergraduates. Its School of Medicine is credited with pioneering a fully self-contained artificial heart transplant, and the Cardinals athletics program has made multiple men's basketball Final Four appearances.
