The University of Liverpool was founded in 1881 and opened its doors to 45 students in 1882. Construction of the Victoria Building, designed by Alfred Waterhouse, began in 1889 and it was opened in December 1892 by Lord Spencer. The red-brick building is said to have inspired the term "redbrick university", and Liverpool describes itself as the original redbrick. It is a founding member of the Russell Group and had 31,050 students in 2024/25, of whom 23,490 were undergraduates and 7,560 postgraduates.
