The University of Leeds was founded in 1904, when King Edward VII granted it a charter as an independent institution, but its origins go back to the Leeds School of Medicine, established in 1831 by a group of young men so that medical students would not have to travel to Scotland, London or overseas. The Yorkshire College of Science followed in 1874, driven by wool and textile industry concern about technology in Europe. The two combined in 1884, and in 1887 joined Owens College Manchester and University College Liverpool as the federal Victoria University. Leeds is a member of the Russell Group.
