The University of Kentucky (UK) is the flagship public land-grant research university of Kentucky, located in Lexington. It was founded in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, part of Kentucky University, and became a separate state institution in the following years. UK offers bachelor's, master's, doctoral and professional degrees across colleges including agriculture, engineering, medicine, law, pharmacy, nursing and business, and operates UK HealthCare, a major academic medical center. Athletics teams compete as the Wildcats in the SEC, and the men's basketball program is nationally prominent. Undergraduate admission is selective: decisions weigh cumulative high school GPA, completion of the pre-college curriculum, ACT or SAT results and special talents, with first offers going to applicants who meet selective criteria.
