The University of Illinois Chicago has roots in private health colleges, the oldest being the Chicago College of Pharmacy in 1859, with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1882 and the Columbian College of Dentistry in 1893 following. Undergraduate classes began at Navy Pier in October 1946 for about 4,000 students a semester. After Mayor Richard J. Daley proposed the Harrison and Halsted site in 1961, the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle campus opened on February 22, 1965. It merged with the University of Illinois at the Medical Center in 1982. UIC says it has almost 34,000 students across 16 colleges and is the largest university in the Chicago area. First-year applicants use the Common Application, and test scores are optional; students who submit must send an official score report with no self-reporting or superscoring.
