The University of Idaho in Moscow is the state's land-grant university and its original public university. The territorial government established it in January 1889, and it opened for classes on October 3, 1892, with roughly 40 students according to university catalogs. It remained Idaho's only university for 71 years, until 1963. The main campus lies in the Palouse region of northern Idaho. For first-year applicants, the university uses GPA tiers: a 3.00 GPA or higher is considered without test scores, a 2.60 to 2.99 GPA requires ACT or SAT scores (minimum ACT 15 or SAT 740), and applicants from 2.30 to 2.59 can enter through the Vandal Gateway Program. Idaho residents who score 3 or higher on both the ISAT math and literacy tests qualify regardless of GPA. The admission application fee is $50, waived for Idaho residents.
