The University of Hull was founded in 1927 as University College Hull, thanks to a £250,000 gift and a donation of land from the local philanthropist and entrepreneur Thomas Ferens. Building work started on 24 August 1927, the Duke of York, later King George VI, laid the foundation stone on 28 April 1928, and the college opened on 11 October to around 39 students with 14 one-person departments. It received its Royal Charter on 6 September 1954, which let it award its own degrees. In 2024/25 it had 14,715 students, of whom 9,035 were undergraduates and 5,680 postgraduates.
