The University of Hertfordshire traces its roots to Hatfield Technical College, founded in 1948, which welcomed its first students to a newly built campus in September 1952 and was recognised as one of the UK's 25 Colleges of Technology by 1959. The institution grew into a polytechnic before gaining full university status in 1992. Today its history and philosophy programmes let students explore and debate the forces shaping national and international societies, with research strengths spanning witchcraft studies, film history, the Cold War, Italian history, and the social, economic and political history of Britain from 1700 to 1900.
