The University of Hawaii at Hilo is a public university on the Big Island of Hawaii, set on a 115-acre campus in Hilo. Its roots go back to the 1940s, when a branch of the University of Hawaii at Manoa operated in Hilo; Wikipedia dates this to 1945, while the university's own timeline begins with the Hilo Program of 1947. A permanent campus on Lanikaula Street opened in the mid-1950s with College Hall and a gymnasium. In 1969-1970 it was reorganized by the state legislature as a four-year campus within the newly created University of Hawaii System, and enrollment passed 1,000. Wikipedia lists 3,539 students for fall 2019. For first-year admission, the catalog says ACT or SAT scores are needed only when the high school GPA is below 2.7 and the applicant has fewer than 24 college credits, or when the applicant was homeschooled.
