The University of Hawaii at West Oahu is a public four-year university in Kapolei, on Oahu's leeward side. It began in January 1976 as West Oahu College, an upper-division school meant to bring bachelor's degrees closer to residents of West and Central Oahu. The first 75 students met in portable classrooms and rented commercial space in Pearl City and Aiea. The school became the University of Hawaii-West Oahu in 1989, welcomed its first freshman class in 2007 and moved to its permanent Kapolei campus in 2012. Enrollment grew from 866 to 2,939 between 2006 and 2016, and a peak of 3,168 was recorded in fall 2020, according to an accreditation report. Wikipedia lists 2,897 students for fall 2025. The official freshman page sets a 2.7 high school GPA with 22 units of coursework for automatic admission.
