The University of Greenwich grew from Woolwich Polytechnic, established in 1890 as the second polytechnic in the UK and open to students a year later. In 1999 it moved into the Old Royal Naval College on a 145-year lease, occupying Queen Anne Court from September 1999, Queen Mary Court in 2000 and King William Court in 2001. The Wren-designed buildings, built between 1696 and 1712 as the Royal Hospital for Seamen and later used to train naval officers until 1998, are part of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site.
