The University of Gloucestershire draws on two older lineages: the Cheltenham Mechanics' Institute of 1834 on the civic side, and Cheltenham Training College, established in 1847 by the Reverend Francis Close, on the church side. It gained university status in 2001. It teaches across three sites, Francis Close Hall and The Park in Cheltenham plus Oxstalls in Gloucester, along with a centre for fashion, art and photography in Cheltenham. Francis Close Hall is known for its historic Gothic architecture. There were about 9,347 students in 2024.
