The University of Glasgow was set up in 1451 by a papal bull granted by Pope Nicholas V, following a suggestion from King James II, to add a university to the city's cathedral. In 1870 it moved from its Old College campus to a new home at Gilmorehill in the West End, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Gothic Revival style; about 1,300 students were attending there by the time it opened. Parts of the old campus, including the Lion and Unicorn Staircase, were moved across. Around 26,600 students are enrolled today.
