The University of Florida traces its roots to the East Florida Seminary, set up in Ocala in 1853 as the state's first state-supported institution of higher learning. It moved to Gainesville in 1866 and the Buckman Act of 1905 consolidated it with Florida Agricultural College; classes began on the Gainesville campus on September 26, 1906 for 102 students. Women were admitted widely after 1947. UF joined the Association of American Universities in 1985 and was named a preeminent university by the Board of Governors after 2013 legislation. It has 16 colleges and over 150 research centres. Enrollment was 54,814 in 2023-24, with 34,924 undergraduates. In fall 2023, 24.0% of 65,375 first-time applicants were admitted. The Gators play NCAA Division I FBS in the Southeastern Conference, and Olympians linked to UF have won 143 medals.
