The University of Dundee started with a donation of £140,000 from Mary Ann Baxter and her cousin John Boyd Baxter, of the family that made its money from Dundee's jute mills, in 1881. University College, Dundee opened on 5 October 1883 with 373 students in the first year, housed in four detached houses bought for £35,000. It became affiliated with the University of St Andrews in 1897, and a 1954 Royal Commission gave it more independence as Queen's College. On 1 August 1967 the University of Dundee came into being by Royal Charter, ending its long link with St Andrews.
